Leadership
The Hansen Leadership Institute (HLI) offers comprehensive training in the principles, practices, and psychology essential for effective, ethical, and visionary leadership. Our program equips Hansen Fellows not only with leadership skills but also with the ability to communicate powerfully and engage in public speaking. Recently, we have also broadened our focus to address gender dynamics in leadership. The intense, immersive nature of our three-week in-person program establishes a foundation for an active online community, where Hansen alumni stay connected, collaborate, and support each other’s peace and community-building initiatives.
Mediation & Conflict Resolution
HLI recognizes that peace-making is an art that requires both in-depth knowledge and finely tuned interpersonal skills. We provide top-tier training and practical instruction to empower our Fellows in mediation and conflict resolution. Our program also enables Fellows to communicate with respect and effectiveness across cultural and political divides, aiming for reconciliation and restorative justice. With human rights often at the heart of conflict resolution, HLI Fellows receive guidance from an experienced human rights activist and expert, enriching their understanding and approach to complex global challenges.
Our Vision
The vision of Fred J. Hansen was to foster a more peaceful world through international cooperation. He aspired for people from around the world to visit the United States, gaining insight into its culture, economy, and governance, while encouraging Americans to broaden their understanding of the world’s diverse peoples and customs. Fred Hansen knew that achieving this vision would demand principled, passionate, and tireless leadership.
At HLI, we honor his vision by working towards world peace through mutual understanding and ethical leadership. Our approach is rooted in generational change, uniting young leaders from regions with ongoing conflicts. We believe that people who may have been adversaries can build enduring friendships, learning to bridge their differences peacefully and with mutual respect. These leaders, in turn, inspire others to do the same. Just as violence can spread, so too can kindness, respect, and cooperation.
HLI is dedicated to fostering hope in a world often seen as divided. We reject the idea that violence and conflict are inevitable. Hansen Fellows embrace the belief that they have the power to transform the world for the better, and HLI is here to help them realize this vision.
Our Mission
The Hansen Leadership Institute (HLI) brings together emerging leaders from around the globe, empowering them with the skills and perspectives needed to promote world peace and foster international cooperation.
